Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Camp, civic, political and religious leader of Rome and Floyd County, who died in a Rome hospital Monday afternoon, were conducted at 11 a.m. today in the West Rome Methodist Church. The pastor, the Rev. B. H. Berrier, and the Rev. Hunter Bassett, a former pastor, officiated and interment was in the family lot in East View Cemetery. The body was placed in state at the church an hour before funeral services.
Members of the Floyd County Democratic Executive Committee and members of the Justice of the Peace Assn. formed an honorary escort.
Mrs. Camp, the former Miss Maynor Ware, was a native of Rome and was educated in the public schools here. Long an active Democratic leader, she was chairman of the Floyd County Democratic Executive Committee at the time of her death, having been a member for more than 20 years. She also was serving her fourth term as justice of the peace for the Mount Alto District. She formerly served on the Seventh District Democratic Executive Committee and also had served as a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee. Mrs. Camp formerly served on the board of registrars and the Floyd County Welfare Board.
Mrs. Camp was married to the late Fred Camp, a former Rome policeman, who died in 1944.
She was one of the few women ever appointed to the staff of a Georgia governor, having been named by Gov. Ernest Vandiver as a lieutenant colonel on his official staff, a post which she held at the time of her death.
