Homer enlisted in the Army on 9 March 1918 and joined the 1102 Aero Replacement Squadron on 12 July 1918. He was discharged as a Sergeant on 31 March 1919. He served in Meuse-Argonne Defensive Sector with the American Expeditionary Forces from 22 June 1918 to the 1st of Aug 1919. He was honorably discharged on 12 Aug 1919.
While serving overseas, Homer was traveling with his unit to Treves and as they passed through Beufchateau he met his nephew Clarence Finger who was stationed in that town. Homer and Clarence were very active in establishing a VFW upon their return to Canton and they served on many committees.
