MARY ALICE JEFFRIES
---This community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Thomas Jeffries which occurred at her home at Locust Hill last Thursday evening after several weeks illness of blood poison which developed from a cat bite. Mrs. Jeffries was taking a cat from a sack when the cat turned and bit her on the hand which caused her death.
---Mrs. Jeffries was quite will known here, having visited her daughter, Mrs. Edythe Swearington and family here. The following obituary was written by her grandson, Willard Bowen:
---On the 11th day of October, 1934, our Savior called on His children for one worthy of a high position. It was Mary Alice Douglas Jeffries, beloved wife of Thomas Jeffries who gave up her wordly cares to be with her Creator.
---She died at the age of seventy-four years and twenty-eight days. She was born September 13, 1860 in Knox County where she spent her life.
---She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Douglas and was united in marriage to Thomas Jeffries on November 3, 1878. To this union was born six children, two sons, Emery, who died in infancy and Raymond Jeffries of San Francisco, California; four daughers, Mrs. Alta Hunter of Plevna, Mrs. Jennie Bowen of St. Louis, Mrs. Edythe Swearington of La Plata and Mrs. Gertrude Davis of near Locust Hill. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Lulu Callahan of Tulsa, Oklahoma and four brothers, Ed Douglas of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Otis Douglas of Locust Hill, Charles Douglas of La Plata and Everett Douglas of near Novelty; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren besides several nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends who miss her cheerfulness.
---She grew up under the influence of the church and Sunday School and followed God's teaching to the end. To have known her was to love her.
---Funeral services were conducted by Rev. John H. Lane of Brashear, Missouri at the Locust Hill Church Saturday, October 13. Interment was in Locust Hill cemetery.
---Her four grandsons and two nephews were her pallbearers and four nieces carried the tributes in floral pieces, they were Jay Swearingen, Paul Hunter, Willard Bowen, Donald Davis, Roy and John Douglas, Mrs. Lee Cook, Mrs. Martha Petree, Mrs. Louise Lindsey and Miss Mazo Douglas.
