Succumbs in Albany

Dr. George A Gilger Jr., 74, of 45 Cambridge Road, Albany, died Sunday in Albany after a short illness.

A native of Syracuse, he was a graduate of North High School and Colgate University. He received his master's and doctor's degrees from Syracuse University.

He formerly was a chemist and metallurgist for the New Process Gear Co.

He became a professor at the State College of Forestry and then moved to Canton as chemistry professor at the State Technical Institute. In 1943 he moved to Albany, serving with the Division of Professional Education in the State Department of Education.

Dr. Gilger was a member of the Board of Examiners in five professions: Optometry, ophthalmic dispensing, podiatry, veterinary medicine and certified shorthand reporting. He retired in 1946.

Dr. Gilger was a member the First Reformed Church, Syracuse; the First Church, Albany; Central City Bodies 305, F&AM, Syracuse; Syracuse Bodies of Scottish Rites; Theta Chi Fraternity of Syracuse University; Torch Club of Albany; Aurania Club of Albany; and several other professional organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ona May Gilger; a sister, Mrs. T. E. O'Leary; and a niece, Miss Harriet O'Leary, of Gettysburg, Pa.

Burial will be Friday in Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be Nov. 24 at a time to be announced in Oakwood Chapel.

There will be no calling hours. Van Dusen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
