Born 1859 in Syracuse, he began his career as a bookkeeper (1881-1882), then became a salesman and commercial traveler; then a purchasing agent and buyer (1918-1919). In the 1920s and 1930s he was employed as a vice-president and purchasing agent for the G. Thalheimer Grocery Comany. (Syracuse city directories).

He married Hattie Noxon in 1885 and they had two children: George A. Gilger, Jr. and Florence Gilger (Mrs. O'Leary).

Services for George A. Gilger of 313 Catherine Street, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 11 A. M. Friday in First Reformed Church by the Rev. William H. Smith. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The body will lie at the church from 10 to 10:45 o'clock. Active bearers will be Leonard Schramm, James Craig, John Reap, John O'Leary, S. Earl Church and Ambrose C. Driscoll. Honorary bearers will be Charles Mayer, Col. Harvey Miller, George N. Crouse, Frederick H. Ebeling, Browing Nichols, Michael J. Lee, Willis J. Spicer, John Single, Dr. Charles McClary, G. J. Ralph, R. S. Brooks, Jr., William Waterstreet, James Dahl, Rudolph Bendixen, Edward F. Hammeken, Harrison H. Goslee and G. Alexander Leonard. Friends may call at the Van Dusen funeral home from 4 to 6 P.M. and from 8 to 10 P.M. Thursday.
