Artist. Clyfford Still is considered by many to be one of the most important Abstract Expressionist artists of the 20th century. After attending Spokane University, he taught at Washington State University, the Richmond Professional Institute, and the California School of Fine Arts. Many solo shows for his work occurred from 1943 through 1970, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1972, he was given the Award of Merit for Painting from the American Academy for Arts and Letters, followed by the Skowhegan Medal for Painting in 1975. Although their styles varied, his contemporaries were some of the most well-known artists of his day: Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko. A unifying feature of their artistic interpretations was the bold, forceful strokes they employed which were meant to evoke the powerful struggle marking the human condition. Still eventually removed himself from the world of art and retired to a farm in Maryland with his wife, Patricia.
