Joseph Roberts was a Confederate Veteran (Company I of the 10th Regiment of the Army of Northern Viginia - officially designated as Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was part of the "Fayette Rifle Greys" assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee. The muster rolls for Joseph show that he was injured in two battles (Crampton's Gap and Gettysburg). In one battle he was shot in the right eye. This bullet also broke his jaw. At another time he was wounded in the left shoulder. Even though he sustained these injuries, he continued to serve until the end of the war.
He was married to Martha Jane Slaton 14 Oct, 1866 in Fayette County, Georgia.
Joseph and Martha Roberts and their first two children moved to Arkansas in about 1870. Their other children were born in Hempstead County, Arkansas.
The Roberts were God-fearing people and they were well respected in the Holly Grove Community outside Hope, Arkansas where they attended church and the children attended the Holly Grove School. We discovered that quite a number of the descendants in this family are ministers of the Gospel.
