Winnie Scowden Proffitt, 83
BROOKSTON — Winnie Scowden Proffitt, 83, of White Pigeon, Mich., a former Brookston resident, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, at her residence.
She was born on March 19, 1919, in Tippecanoe County, to Jesse and Mary Scowden. She married Donald Proffitt on Oct. 10, 1941, in Lafayette. He died on Nov. 17, 1986.
She had lived in Michigan for the past 15 years, after living in the Brookston and Battle Ground communities. She was a 1937 graduate of West Point High School, and attended Lafayette Business College.
She was a homemaker. She worked at Purdue University as an office clerk, and retired in 1971.
She attended the Presbyterian Church in White Pigeon.
Surviving are daughters, Gloria Kope of Union, Mich. and Patricia (Woody) Everly of Warsaw; sons, Jim (Janet) Proffitt of Flora and Daniel Proffitt of Upton, Wyo.; sisters, Ella Swisher of Battle Ground and Mae Cain of Buck Creek; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3-8 p.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Lelan McReynolds officiating.
Burial will be at Pretty Prairie Cemetery, Battle Ground.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
