John is a son of Silas and Ellender Wallace Bell. He was first married to Eliza Jane Allen. Their license to marry was issued June 16, 1844. John and Eliza married August 21, 1844 in Monroe County, Tennessee, by Rev. Robert Henderson (Tennessee Marriage Records,1780-2002). They had four children together.

After the death of Eliza, John married Malinda Bama Wilson in 1856 (US and International Marriage Records,1560-1900) in Monroe County, Tennessee. John and Malinda were the parents of six children.

John bought the Bell homeplace in Monroe County, Tennessee from his father in 1846. It included 80 acres in the Hiwassee District, and all of the tools and equipment for tanning leather. John was also a farmer and later was ordained a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In 1856 he moved to Dade County, Missouri, south of Arcola in Polk Township. His brother Silas Bell Jr. and sister Mary Ann Bell Wilson and families soon followed him to Dade County. John, Silas and Mary Ann's mother Ellender lived with John's family until her death.

In 1872 John moved the family to the Halltown area in Lawrence County, Missouri.
