1st Post Master @ Henry, VA
STOKELEY DYER, Lt, enlisted as a Private on 01 May 1862 at Norfolk County, VA, in Company A, 6th VA Regiment, CSA. At some time in 1863 Stokeley Dyer appeared before Justice George King and took oath of office as Lt for the Confederate Army. The 6th VA Infantry was assigned to A. P. Hill's 3rd Corps, 1st Division, commanded by D. H. Anderson at Gettysburg. William Mahone was the brigade commander. Hill's corps saw extensive action on the first day of the battle and was also part of Pickett's Charge on the third day as at least one of Hill's divisions was placed on the left flank for the charge and commanded by James Pettigrew, a professor at NC. He also fought at Second Manassas (loss of 56 men), the Crater (loss of 80 men), Burgess' Mill (loss of 92 men), and was at the surrender at Appomattox Court House on 09 Apr 1865. He, as did most, walked home some 116 miles on that very sad occasion.
On 25 January 1866, Stokeley Dyer married his first cousin, once removed, Miss Elizabeth "Eliza" Prillaman. They most likely had known each other most of their lives and settled in the Brown Hill District of Franklin County, VA, near where they had grown up. Six children followed, two of whom passed away the same year of flux.
He later served his community by accepting appointment of postmaster when the post office was established in the town of Alumine (now Henry) on 03 June 1893.
Both are buried on land settled by their ancestor Dennis O'Brient sometime prior to 1762.
