Burl Applegate, Jr. Age 71, passed away at home after a long illness on April 28th, 2011.
He was born Sept. 3, 1939 in Lincoln Parish, Wyoming to Pearl Hodge and Burl Applegate, Sr. After two previous marriages, Burl found his true love, Regina Barnhurst in Panquitch, Utah where she worked at the drug store. They married one year later in Las Vegas, NV on July 17, 1987. Their adventures took them to N.V. then N.M. and back to Utah. Following a head injury and subsequent stroke in Feb. 2008 they moved to Nephi, UT. to be closer to family. Although Burl lost most of his independence and ability to communicate, he never lost his sense of humor.
They moved to Hurricane, UT. in Aug. 2010.
Burls' early years were spent in Missouri where he played the Mandolin and guitar and competed in the radio spelling bees. He moved to CO. with his father, stepmother, and siblings to work at the family saw mill and logging business. Burl joined the Army in Nov. 1957. He was a Heavy Weapons Infantry man and Sharpshooter, even though he was blind in his left eye. He served in Korea and was Honorably Discharged in Feb. 1961. Having an adventurous nature, he hiked his way across the U.S. from Georgia to Colorado. Burl worked as a Waiter, Uranium miner, Oil rigger, Poker dealer and construction worker. But his love was the mountains and every spring they called to him. He loved to travel and try new things but the mountains always called him home with a chainsaw in his hands.
He tried to instill integrity, tolerance and strong work ethics in his children. He loved to help others less fortunate than himself. He was a Good Samaritan and believed in Karma and Paying it forward." He took pride in his Cherokee heritage, had a free spirit and loved his independence. Burl had a magnetic personality; he made friends easily and had an outrageous grin and a twinkle in his eye. He loved to "Push your buttons" and "ruffle your feathers" one minute and have you laughing at yourself the next. Burl will be greatly missed, but well remembered in the stories told around campfires and poker tables, back yards and living rooms of every life he has ever touched.
He is survived by his wife Regina, who is 18 years younger than him. His step-son Kevin S. Eastman of Salt Lake City, UT. Four children from a previous marriage; Patricia Uaudrie of Kamas, UT . , Nancie Brown of pueblo, CO, Burl and Ashley Applegate of Heber, UT and Melissa of Minnesota.
Burl took pride in his 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 3 surviving sisters and 3 brothers and their families. Burl was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers; Roy Lee and Robert Henry; and one sister-Lou Emma McGuiness. Burl's request to be cremated was honored by his family. A portion of his ashes will be interned some time in the future by his children and their families, with a grave side service with Military Honors. The remaining ashes will be kept and mixed with Regina's' at the time of her passing-to let free upon the wind-one last adventure together-one final dance together on this earthly plain.
