He is the son of Burrell Douglas (1825-1884) and Mary Ann Strickland (1830-1869).
He is the husband of Emily Jane Eunice (1857-1942) who later married Carter Sims after death of James R. Douglas. He is buried in an unmarked grave today by Emily Jane Eunice-Douglas-Sims in this cemetery. At one time his grave was marked by a wooden marker which has since been destroyed by mother nature. Together, James R. Douglas and Emily Jane Eunice had 3 known children:
- Mary Ann Douglas (1875-1960); married Izakiah J. Dowling (1875-1947)
- Viney "Vinie" Douglas (1877-1954); married James Franklin Strickland (1872-1944).
- Margarett "Maggie" Douglas (1879-1925); married Henry Harley Howell (1884-1968).
