Jacob was the son of Henry Brus (1791- 1879) and Anna Schlutter ( - 1832). Jacob Brus emigrated to America in 1848. In 1850, he went to Davenport, Iowa and worked in a saw mill. He then hired out as a farm hand until 1856 when he purchased a threshing machine. Eventually, he was able to purchase a farm. He was a very successful farmer. He increased his acreage until his farm numbered 800 acres. He and his wife, Eliza, were the parents of eleven children.
