Elizabeth was the daughter of Peter Ries (1813-1889) and Susan Maisnack Ries ( -1853). She was a farm wife and then after her husband Nicholas' early death in 1881, became the head of the household and continued farming. She and Nicholas married in 1867 and were the parents of seven children, three of whom died in infancy.
