Veteran WWII - Sergeant U.S. Marine Corps. Participated in major sea battles including Midway, Santa Cruz Islands and 3rd and 4th Salvo Islands. On the USS Northampton escort during the Doolittle Raid and subsequently survived the sinking of the torpedoed Northampton at the battle off Guadalcanal.
Husband of the late Margaret (nee Heing), Lieutenant U.S. Navy. Father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Enjoyed piloting biplanes, motorcycle riding along the coast of Italy, and driving his Cinquicento throughout Europe. Avid reader, gifted writer and world traveler. He enjoyed life.
A heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of the Whitehall of Deerfield who became his extended family during his nearly four years of residency. Their respectful and compassionate care was extraordinary each and every day. Thank you to Rev. George Klein whose weekly visits over the past many years provided both friendship and spiritual reflection. Thank you to the physicians, nurses, social worker and chaplain of Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter, who so beautifully guided his transition from one life to the next.
A memorial mass will take place at St. Phillip the Apostle, 1962 Old Willow Rd. Northfield, IL. on Saturday, June 4, 2011, 11:00 a.m.. Private internment, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
