Benonni is the son of Benjamin Hathaway and his first wife. Benoni was the last child born to the marriage. He married twice - (1) Ruth Ludlam (1765) and (2) Demaris _____.

Benoni served during the Revolutionary War as a captain and lieutenant colonel in the Morris County (NJ) militia, Eastern Battalion in 1777. In 1779 he served as a lieutenant colonel in Colonel Van Dike's Regiment of State Troops.
