Mustered in at Adrian MI June 20, 1861. Veterans consolidated with 1st MI Infantry June 30, 1864. Total enrollment 1325. At the Wheatfield on July 2nd, 1863, there were 403 men present for duty. One officer and 24 men were killed, 9 officers and 55 men wounded, 1 officer and 75 men missing. When the unit's color bearer was killed and the flag captured, the Commanding officer Col. Harrison Jeffords quickly went forward to rescue the flag from the attackers. He suffered a shot in the leg and was bayoneted in the chest after falling. He died the following day. When the monument was designed, the survivors of the unit requested that the monument be dedicated to Col. Jeffords.
