He and his wife farmed on the Jontz Century Farm east of Baxter until his retirement in 1998. Clyde had also worked for several years at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown. He loved writing poetry and had taught poetry to grade school children. Clyde was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Baxter Masonic Lodge, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Scottish Rite.
