Son of Lucy E. Berrie (1847-1915) and Elias Reed Atkinson (1847-1909). His siblings included: Edmund, William Henry, Fanny L., Thornton Camden, Sarah Constance, Elizabeth, and Talmadge. Grandson of Sarah E. Waddell (1809-1858) and Edmund Atkinson (1801-1862).

In 1870, his parents lived on a farm they owned in Satilla Mills, Camden County, Georgia. In 1880, they were in Horse Stamp, Camden County.

In 1910, he was living with his mother and younger brother in Martin, Marion County, Florida. The household included: Lucy Atkinson, age 60, born in Georgia to a father from Florida and a mother from Georgia, a farmer; J W, age 26, born in Georgia to Georgia parents, a farmer; Talmadge, age 23, born in Georgia to Georgia parents, a laborer in a repair shop; and Gladis Wilson, age 7, an orphan born in Florida to Florida parents.
