This cemetery is the last remains of the settlement that once thrived here in Johnson Canyon. The town of Johnson was settled in 1871 by the four Johnson brothers: Joel Hills, Joseph Ellis, Benjamin Franklin and William Derby. On January 23, 1871, Joel Hills Johnson was asked by President Brigham young to look at land in a specific canyon in southern Utah named Spring Canyon and settle it. Joel and three of his brothers went to look at the land and found a beautiful canyon with excellent fencing-timber, firewood, and large meadows with plenty of water. In March, the brothers moved their families out of the canyon. They planted trees, vineyards, gardens, and named it Johnson Canyon. In October, word came from Kanab that the Navajos were going to make a raid on the settlement, so the people moved into Kanab. The Navajos came, but only for a friendly visit, so the settlers moved back to Johnson. Upon return, they discovered insufficient water for farming, so some of the families began raising livestock. Later they dug out the springs and found plenty of water. Soon other families began moving to this beautiful canyon, some of which included the Glovers, Bennetts, Laws, Wilsons, Mackelprangs, Buchanans, Glaziers, and Jacksons. Soon the town of Johnson had a school, store, post office, and many other places of interest. Now only a few ranchers remain, and the town of Johnson no longer exists. None of the original buildings remain. The only proof that a settlement ever existed is this cemetery and journals of people who lived here.
