SMSGT Ira C. Muse (US Air Force Retired) passed away in Tallahassee, Florida on June 1, 2011 from natural causes.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lily Nell Muse and two sons, Major Ira C. Muse, Jr. (US Army Retired) and Colonel Gayland D. Muse (US Army Retired); five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by his mother and father, seven sisters, one brother and his youngest son, Leslie.
SMSGT Muse was born at Hemphill, Louisiana in November 1922 and graduate from Boyce High School in 1940.
After graduation, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked planting trees throughout much of what is now Kisatchie National Forest. He served in the Army Air Corps in England during WWII as a B-17 Tail Gunner and was credited with shooting down two enemy aircraft during that period. He was awarded the Distinguished Fly Cross and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters for these separate actions.
After the war, he continued his military service in the Air Force most often assigned to pioneering nuclear bomber units flying as a Gunner on B-29'S and then B-52'S, until his retirement in 1964. At that time, he moved back to the area where he was born and began a twenty year career working for the US Postal Service in Alexandria which culminated in 1985.
Afterwards and late into his life, he and Lily traveled extensively in their motorhome enjoying the beauty of the Western United States, Canada, and Alaska.
SMSGT Muse was a wonderful husband and great father who lived a long, honorable and exciting life. He will be missed by family and friends.
It is intended his remains be placed in Arlington National Cemetery.
