John was drafted to serve in the Civil War from Crawford Co Ohio. He came home and died shortly thereafter. The following appears in an 1881 Crawford Co Ohio bio sketch for his wife: "served a 9mo draft period during the Civil War. "Resolved That in the death of Mr. Handley, this society has lost an exemplary and influential member. As a member he was amiable, kind and courteous: he was a moat humorist and a keen satirist: as a debater he, excelled: as a citizen he, ardently loved his country: he expended liberally in the suppression of the recent rebellion: he was the soldier's fast friend. As an individual, he was honest and obliging: he was an affectionate husband and a kind father."
His brother Perry also was in the Civil War, having served with Co H 123rd OVI with William Striker, a brother to Lucinda (Handley) Striker (Mrs Mathias)
