Notes for PHILIP OLA DEWATER:
As a young boy, he lived on farms in Oklahoma and Kansas. When Philip was five years old, his father died, so he and several siblings were placed in a Masonic Orphanage. He remained in the orphanage until he was 12, at which time he returned to help his mother on a farm in Clearwater, Ks. At age 20, he hired out as a farm hand. Philip and Clara Etta Adams met on a large Ranch where they both worked. Philip and Clara were 21 and 18 years old when they married at Wichita,Ks in 1911. In 1915, they traveled by covered wagon, northeast to Dakota City, Iowa a small town in north central Iowa. They traveled with their first born two daughters Elsie and Helen. They had their 3rd daughter born in Dakota City, Iowa in 1916 little Ruth Dewater.
Waterloo Man Kills Himself
Philip Ola Dewater, 61, of Casebeer Heights, took his own life Sunday morning when he placed a .22 caliber rifle in his mouth and pulled the trigger. County Coroner Sidney Smith said Dewater committed suicide because, of despondency over ill health. Dewater was found about, 5am by his son lying in the yard alongside his home. A resident of Waterloo 31 years, Mr. Dewater was a meat cutter and since 1936 was employed at, the Rath Packing company. He was born May 31, 1890, at Hutchinson, Kan., the son of Hamilton and Elizabeth Dewater. He married Clara Adams, Oct. 9, 1911, at Wichita, Kan., and moved a short time later to Clearwater, Kan.
Mr. Dewater moved to Humboldt, la., in 1915 and lived there five years prior to coming to this city. He was affiliated with the. First Methodist church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dewater is survived by four sons,' Keith, of Evansdale; Russell, of Hutchinson, Kan.; Ralph, of Wichita, Kan., and Lee, serving in Austria with the U, S. army.
There are also eight daughters: Mrs. Lyle Knutson, Stewartville, Minn.; Mrs. Forrest Alcott, 111 Irving street; Mrs. James Martin, Mrs. O. B. Immesote and Mrs. Wayne Brawner, Hutchinson, Kan.; Mrs. Edwin Hahn, Ionia, Ia., and Marlys and Nadine Dewater at home.
Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Ella Macredie, and Mrs. Jessie Roll, Wichita, Kan.; and Mrs. Connie Hukle, Mulvane, Kan.; a brother, C. C. Dewater, Mt. Hope, Kan., and 27 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters.
