Joann Ferguson, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in Sandy, Utah.

Joann was born July 3, 1938 in Provo, Utah to Horace T. Jones and Laura G. McBride. She married Jack Hillis on September 12, 1956; later divorced. Joann married Rodney E. Ferguson on December 15, 1984, and spent twenty-two happy years until his death on May 26, 2006.

Joann spent her early life growing up in Midvale and Sandy. She attended Jordan High School and was a member of the Charlonian Girls Club which marched at football and basketball games. The Charlonians also acted as host for other school activities.

While at Jordan High she took many business classes which later proved valuable in her career. After high school Joann married and moved to Sacramento, California, where her daughter, Lori, was born.

She worked at an insurance company until fate led her to Anchorage, Alaska. She was again working for an insurance company and enjoying life until March 27, 1964.

On that day Anchorage was hit by a 9.2 magnitude earthquake, killing 131 people and causing $2 billion in damage. It was the most powerful earthquake in North American history.

Her family did not hear from her for several days because all communication lines were damaged. Finally she was able to call home and let the family know she was not injured. After the earthquake, she returned to live in Sandy.

Joann went into the workforce, first for Security Title, then Blue Cross Blue Shield, Duane Brown Chevrolet and Merit Medical. She was an executive assistant to the CEO of the last three firms.

Any family is fortunate if there is at least one person who keeps in contact with extended family, both near and far away. Joann was just such a person. She stayed in touch with cousins from Idaho to Long Island, New York.

All of these families have expressed great appreciation for her efforts and sadness at her death. One such cousin is ninety years old and had spoken with Joann less than one week ago. Joann was a loving mother to her daughter Lori as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her loving husband, Rodney Ferguson, passed away almost exactly five years ago. She had resolutely moved forward with her life until late 2010 when she developed health problems which were very serious. Despite a valiant struggle to recover, her health declined until her passing.

Joann is survived by her daughter, Lori (Kirby) Trumbo; step-daughters Sue (Steve) Middleton, Judy Foster and Vicky (Randy) Robinson; brothers David E. Jones (Ardis), Gary M. Jones (Shirley), Lynn A. Jones (Peg) and Bryce C. Jones (Carol); and her sister, Virginia (Rick) McMichael.

A graveside service will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah, on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
