Gary Mac Jones died on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at his residence in Salt Lake City, concluding an exemplary life and a long struggle with melanoma cancer.

Born January 5, 1940 to Horace T. Jones and Laura McBride Jones in Midvale, he graduated from Jordan High School in 1958. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1963 with a B.S. degree in Political Science. He earned a Masters of Urban Planning degree from the University of Washington in 1965, followed by post-graduate work in planning law at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was a charter member of the AICP professional planning organization.

He was awarded a fellowship in 1970 with the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations in Washington, D.C. Gary's professional service included employment in local, state, and federal government. He was engaged as a planning consultant for over thirty years. He was responsible for many important planning and development projects throughout the Intermountain West. He was an adjunct professor in planning and public affairs at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University for many years. He mentored many of his former students in his consulting business.

Gary married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Greenwood, on December 15, 1961 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had two children. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Jennifer (Philip Beck). A son, Matthew Alan, died in 2001. Gary had four adored grandchildren, Alexander, Erin, Devin, and Ella. He is survived by three brothers, David, Lynn, and Bryce; and one sister, Ginny (McMichael). JoAnn (Ferguson) preceded him in death in 2010.

Gary and Shirley loved to travel in the U.S.A. and abroad, and were fearless! — eschewing guided tours for chosen, sometimes serendipitous destinations. They almost always rented a car — even in England, Scotland, and Wales, navigating roundabouts while driving on the wrong side of the road! Gary was always game for a spur-of-the-moment "road trip." They also took their family on a week-long cruise to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 2011.

Gary was blessed to serve in many fulfilling LDS Church callings over the years. He had many close friends and stayed in touch with them and his extended family. He will be remembered as a renowned storyteller who often took considerable liberty with his version of the truth.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 14, 2018 in the Ensign First Ward Chapel, 135 North A Street (200 East), Salt Lake City. Public viewings will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street (100 East), Midvale, and Monday from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. prior to the 11:00 a.m. service in the chapel.
