LeRoy worked his father's farm and attended school during the winters until he was seventeen. He was apprenticed as a machinist in the locomotive shops of Swinburn Brothers, Paterson, New Jersey in 1851. He removed to Tioga, Tioga, Pennsylvania about 1855, where he worked in the railroad shops for two years, and also met his wife. He was employed first by the Erie Railroad Company and then by the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad Company at Addison, New York. He removed to Windham, Greene, New York by 1860, and the to Susquehanna Depot, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania in April 1865, where he again worked for the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad Company, which transferred him to Kingston. LeRoy then worked for the Elmira and Westport Railroad Company at Elmira, New York.
He went west to Illinois to work for Joliet Steel Company in 1871. He was foreman of the machine department, Chicago, Milwaukee and Saint Paul Railroad Company, Freeport division, in 1873, and foreman of the machine department, Illinois Central Railroad Company, Freeport, in 1889.
"An excellent workman" with "thorough knowledge of his craft in all its details" … "one of the most capable machinists on the line". Member of the Excelsior Lodge, and of the Freeport Commandery.
He removed to Los Angeles in 1907, and died of tetanus one week after having stepped on a rusty nail while helping his son-in-law, Ira Rubendall, building contractor, 13 months after retirement.
