Joe was born the son of William and Anna Hostetler Getzel. Joe grew up in Fulda and graduated from Fulda High School in 1940. He served in the United States Army as an M.P. during World War II in Camp Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Lewis, Washington. Joe married Betty Franzen on June 12, 1946 in Avoca, MN. After their marriage, he farmed for a time. Joe worked as an assistant manager at the Brewster Elevator. He then worked as a custodian at the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Brewster American Legion for several yars until his retirement in May of 2004. Joe was named Nobles County Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1994. He served on the Brewster Fire Department for eighteen years and the City Council for ten years. Joe was a member of the Brewster American Legion for thirty years. He loved to mow lawns for others. Joe passed away at his home.

Joe & Betty are the parents of Rodney Getzel & Jason (Molly) Getzel.

Joe's siblings include Doug (Donna) Getzel, Lucille Gerber, Dorothy (Russell) Gerdes, & half siblings, Adele (Vince) Schindler, Vergene Bouglet, & Pat (Arvin) Loosbrock. He was preceded in death by two half brothers.

Funeral services were held March 11 from Trinity Lutheran Church, Pastor David McDonald officiating.
