The many friends of James R Skaggs, who lived near Daniels for over 50 years, are expressing regret, today, for belated news of his death has just come from his widow, Mrs Hattie Meadows Skaggs, to whom he was married May 11, 1921, following the death of his first wife, Mrs Rebecca Boley Skaggs, December 13, 1919.
The fact that Mr Skaggs moved to Kansas accounts for the delay in news of his demise, which actually occurred June 4. He was 90 years old.
Two daughters by his first marriage, Mrs Lina Bryant and Mrs Laura Griffith, are residents of Daniels, and he had many other relatives hereabouts.
The son of James and Rebecca Skaggs, he was born near Union, Monroe county, March 31, 1845, the oldest of ten children of whom only two survive, Joseph L Skaggs, of Fredonia, and Mrs Margaret Staples of Ritsel, Washington.
Although but eighteen years of age at the outbreak of the War between the states, he served three and one-half years in the army of the Confederacy, two years in Company C, the 31st battalion, and the remainder with Company B of the 21st Virginia cavalry. His life following the war was devoted to agricutural pursuits, and since September of 1920 he had been a resident of Kansas.
Twenty-three grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren survive him.
Mr and Mrs Claude Skaggs of Shady Spring, Dorsey Skaggs, of Crab Orchard, and Frank Skaggs of Beckley drove to Fredonia to attend the funeral services; he was their grandfather. A firing squad from Charles Walters Post No 8, the American Legion, fired a volley over his grave.
