W. LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Dr. Donald L. Schuder, 79, of 2319 Sycamore Lane, W. Lafayette, Ind., passed away January 17, 2002 at Heritage Health Care in West Lafayette where he had been a patient for nine days.
He had a retirement home on Sedar Bay, Calumet and attended First Baptist Church of Calumet every summer.
Donald was a member of the Miscowaubik Club, Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club and a frequent speaker. He was also a member of the Calumet Theatre, the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club and the seaman Mineralogical Museum Society. He was a participant and contributor in the Red Metal Retreat in Association of Michigan Tech University since its inception in 1987.
A native Hoosier, he was born in Bartholomew County, Ind. near Columbus, on March 4, 1922, the eldest son of Henry W. and Pearl Estelle { Mounts}Schuder. He graduated from Columbus Central High School in 1940 where he was co-editor of the Log, the high school annual. He was awarded the Bausch & Lomb Science award upon graduation. He attended Purdue University from 1941-'42, 1945-'48 on a science scholarship. All three degrees were awarded by Purdue University: BS in 1948, MS in 1949, and PhD in 1957. He majored in the science of entomology with minors in horticulture, botany and plant pathology.
He worked for Purdue University from 1949 to 1987 in the Department of Entomology with major responsibilities in research, teaching and extension. He taught a popular course 'Insect Pests of Ornamental Plants' and authored a text book of the same name that was widely used in other institutions as well. He authored over 170 publications on insects, mostly in the area of extension. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1950, Associate Professor in 1954, Full Professor in 1958 and Professor Emeritus in 1986.
Schuder helped edit Ortho's 'Problem Solver'. The reference book, found in every garden center and hardware store has been expanded and is also available on the internet. He contributed several photographs for this latest undertaking.
As a moonlighting job, Schuder served as Executive Secretary and Editor for the Indiana Association of Nurserymen, Inc. from 1955-1987 and was past president of the Nursery Secretaries Assn. from 1960-1962.
Schuder served as a head usher for Purdue football and basketball games starting in the old fieldhouse from 1955 until the 1980's and was a rabid Boilermaker fan.
He was a licensed Arborist in the State of Illinois starting in 1959. An American Registered Professional Entomologist (No. 147) starting in 1971 and an Indiana Certified Pesticide Applicator, Category 10, from 1977 and a deputy Nursery Inspector for the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources, Division of Entomology until retirement.
He was a 100% disabled veteran of WW II following military service as a corporal attached to the 8th Air Force in England. He married Lt. Mary E. Ricketts, RN at Fletcher General Army Hospital on March 31, 1945 and they were the parents of two sons, Phillip R. and David L. They have four grandchildren.
Donald's hobbies included genealogy, nature photography, gardening, many arts and crafts including watercolor and oil painting and for several years made aluminum pop can airplanes for friends.
For over 20 years, he served as chairman of the North Central Branch Insect Photo Salon and chaired the National Insect Photo Salon for over 15 years. He still has occasional acceptances of his slides and a drawer full of ribbons attesting to his skills.
During the school year for over 30 years, he taught lapidary and silversmithing classes two nights a week in cooperation with the Wabash Valley Gem and Mineral Society and the W. Lafayette Department of Parks and Recreation.
He was a member of The International Shade Tree Conference and Midwest Arborists Assn., Thomas Say Entomological Society (past president), Photographic Society of American, Indiana Junior Horticultural Association (Director), Jerry Clegg Memorial Gardens board member, past president of the Greater Lafayette Aquarium Society, past president of the Wabash Valley Gem and Mineral Society and frequent show chairman, Purdue University Extension Specialists Association, MidAmerican Christmas Trees Assn. and the Indiana Christmas Tree Growers Assn., the Michigan Nature Assn. and life member of the Mazon Creek Fossil Project of Ill.
He was a fellow in the Indiana Academy of Science and had been awarded honorary life membership in the Entomological Society of American Indiana Association of Nurserymen, Indianapolis Landscape Assn., N.W. Indiana Assn. of Nurserymen, Indiana Arborist Assn., the Indiana Golf Course Superintendents Assn., Nursery Executives Assn. Pi Alpha Xi (National Floriculture Honorary), Gamma Sigma Delta (Agricultural Honorary) and Sigma Xi.
He was cited in American Men and Women of Science and Who's Who in the Midwest.
Donald was a member of the Federated Church of W. Lafayette, Ind. and a member of the Building Committee and designer of the church's widely publicized Religious Garden. He served as a deacon, chairman of fellowship committee, substitute teacher, lay leader of the Sunday worship service, head usher etc.
He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip R. Schuder; and a brother.
Donald is survived by his wife, Mary of West Lafayette, Ind.; and a son, David L. (Linda) Schuder of Madison, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Bryan and Leslie Schuder, Mark Schuder and Mary Ann (Jason) Hazelwood.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 20, at the Federated Church, 2400 Sycamore Lane, West Lafayette, with Rev. David Mills officiating.
