First Postmaster of Des Moines as well as Mayor of Des Moines. He was the brother of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. His Victorian home in the Sherman Hills section of Des Moines was used as Des Moines' first art gallery. It is now the home of the Des Moines Women's Club.
