Augustus W. Jones was the fourth of six sons of Joel and Jane Jones. He was born in Dacusville Township, Pickens Co., South Carolina in 1833. The 1850 Dacusville census lists 17 year old Augustus Jones living with parents Joel (60) and Jane (55) and siblings Garen (22), Florentine (16) and Butler (9). A sworn affidavit states that Augustus married Adaline in Pickens County in 1852.
The 1860 census for Holly Creek, Murray Co, Georgia lists 28 year old farm laborer A. W. Jones living with wife Adaline (25), daughter Elcaney J. (6), Mary C. (4) and Thomas V. (1).
The 1870 census for Dacusville lists 32 year old Adeline Jones living with Jane (15), Thomas (11) and Franklin (8). No husband.
Augustus and Adeline were members of the Peters Creek Baptist Church in Pickens Co. Adeline left the church in 1859 and returned in1863. Peters Creek Baptist Church lists Augustus as dead in 1864, but death date not given.
Augustus volunteered into Avery's Dragoons of the 12th Georgia Calvary on Jan. 10, 1862 in Dalton, Ga. He died of disease (Rubella virus) on April 12, 1862 in Corinth, Mississippi.
