Celebration
Dorothy Nelson celebrated her 101st birthday on Sept. 11.
She enjoyed sugar-free cake with her friends at the Samantha Wilson Care Center at BayView.

These days all of her treats are sugar-free, but that doesn't spoil her temptations.
"Cookies, candies, and, oh yeah, chocolate," Nelson said.
Nelson very modestly shrugged off the idea of having a secret to life.
"No secrets, no smoking, no wine, never went with that," Nelson said. Coffee is still a favorite, and an occasional diet coke. "Can't drink all them cold drinks."
Friends and family know her as "Dot."
She keeps busy with church services at BayView and many activities, including bus trips around town.
Barbara Hosier, director of activities and volunteer services, said "She likes 'Sweet Treat' Friday, Bingo and painting birdhouses."
Many residents paint birdhouses in the craft room, and then the birdhouses are put on display at the center.
Nelson was born in St. Augustine. She mentions shopping with her parents at the Quality Food Grocery Store that used to be on Bridge Street owned by fellow centenarian Max Jaffe, 104.
She resided in New Jersey for many years, where she met her late husband, Edwin Nelson. They moved to south Florida with their two sons. She has been at BayView since 1994.
