A. Arthur Birum, 75, a resident of the Saco community for more than half a century, died Tuesday evening, May 24, at a Glasgow hospital after an illness of about three weeks in the hospital.

He picked up enough knowledge of telegraphy to hold down a job as telegrapher but later took a position as timekeeper for the railway at Havre.

In the spring of 1901 Birum returned to Saco and entered the employ of C.W. Nelson Company, general merchants. He remained with the Nelson company until 1906 and when the business was bought by C.E. Nelson he remained as one of the employees.

Birum established himself in business in Dodson in 1909 as a branch of the Saco Mercantile. A year later he returned to Saco and founded the firm of Birum and Nelson. At the death of his partner, L.B. Nelson in 1915, the name of the business was changed to the Birum-Nelson company.

The deceased was married on Aug. 15, 1906 to Nellie D. Nelson, daughter of Rezin and Rhoda Nelson of New Richland, Minn. About nine years ago Mr. Birum retired from active business and sold the store to his niece and nephew;, Mr. and Mrs. C. Lee Nelson. For many years he has also been interested in farming and owned a large wheat farm in the Harb district, south of Saco. This was sold recently to Harvey Bruckner.

Mr. Birum is survived by his widow and two sisters, who live in Hayfield, Minn.

His sister and brother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Harry Baker of Hayfield, Minn, and Mrs. Birum's relatives, Harry Nelson, Mrs. Harvey Crumb, Mrs. Harold Skelton and Mrs. Jennie Nelson all of New Richland, Minn. are arriving today (Thursday) to attend the funeral.
