Ella Hazel Baker was born on March 15, 1886 in North Redwood, Minnesota. The youngest of four children born to Ener and Anna Victoria Ortt Birum, she attended schools in the community, graduating in 1907. Ella received her teaching certificate from Mankato Normal in 1907 and taught school for a year in Missoula, Montana.

Having met Harry R. Baker while in high school, Ella was married to him in Minneapolis on June 3, 1908. Dr. Baker practiced medicine at Gilbert, Minnesota on the iron range for two years before the couple moved to Waltham where he practiced for four years before moving to Hayfield in 1912.

In Hayfield Ella was very active in the life of the church and the Presbyterian Women's Association. Mrs. Baker was the first woman mayor in the history of Hayfield and is remembered for her work in that capacity. She was also involved in the community as a member of several civic groups including the Hayfield Study Club and Music Club and in later years, the Senior Citizens of both Hayfield and Delano, Minnesota, following her move there five years ago. In Delano she also served as a "pink lady" in the Health Care Center.

Two children were born to the Bakers, Russell and Doris. Ella was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, and her husband (on March 26, 1972).

She is survived by her children, Dr. Russell Baker of Champaign, Illinois and Mrs. Don Gilmer (Doris) of Delano, Minnesota, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Ella Baker died at about 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 11, 1983 at the Health Care Center in Delano, Minnesota where she had been a resident since January 1, 1983.
