James Arthur “Art” Baker, 55, former resident of this vicinity and sheriff of Montgomery County eight years, died Sunday afternoon at his home in Red Oak, his death resulting from pneumonia and anaemia following stomach ailment of many years. He served as a state agent for the department of criminal investigations under Goveror Dan W Turner.
He was born in Villisca December 17, 1881, and was the son of James Davidson Baker and Rachel R. Russell. He was reared on a farm east of here and on December 31, 1903, was married in Red Oak to Miss Grace Houston. They resided several years in Portland, Oregon, where he engaged in business and when they returned to Montgomery County in 1917, Mr. Baker was employed as deputy sheriff under the late C. Ed Peterson. In 1922 he was Republican Candidate for the office and was elected and reelected three times.
Besides his widow, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Davis of Red Oak, and four brothers, Guy and Harry Baker of Red Oak, S. C. Baker of Shenandoah, and Newton Baker of Panora.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Perryman Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, conducted by the Rev. Orval Walker, pastor of the Christian Church. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.
