An Honored Man Stricken with Apoplexy at Dana Indiana A Former Newman Citizen Became Unconcious While Riding in His Buggy Near Dana, Indiana, Thursday Morning. Mr Jacob Ogdon, for many years a highly respected businessman in Newman but for the past twelve years a citizen of Metcalf, where he was engaged in the merchantile business and had been very successful, while driving to his farm near Dana, Ind. with his son, Samuel, was stricken with apoplexy Thursday of last week, from which he died Saturday night around 9 o'clock. Mr. Ogdon, some few months ago, sold his store in Metcalf and purchased a farm near Dana, Ind. At the time his son, Samuel, was a resident of Long Beach, Cal. A few days ago, the son returned for a visit with his parents, and his father being anxious that he might view the newly purchased land, procured a horse and buggy and started to drive him to the farm. While about a mile north of Dana, Mr. Ogdon complained to his son of having an awful headache, which the son attributed to the jolting recieved in riding. Only a short distance was covered when the son turned in the buggy to ask his father how he was feeling, and discovered his semi-unconscious condition and inability to speak. The son carried him into a farm house nearby and immediately summoned two physicians from Dana, who pronounced his case beyond the help of human agencies and informed the relatives who were soon at his bedside, that death was only a few hours hence. The death angel came about 9 o'clock Saturday night. The remains were taken to the late home in Metcalf Sunday morning, where they lay until Monday morning when they were conveyed to the Christian Church in Metcalf, where the funeral services, under the auspices of the Metcalf I.O.O.F, took place. Rev. S. E. Sines officiated, assisted by Rev. J. F. Hollingsworth. After the funeral rites the remains were brought to the Newman Cemetery for interment. There were about sixty Odd Fellows from the Metcalf lodge in attendance, besides relatives and friends.
Members of the Newman lodge joined the funeral party here, as did a large number of relatives and friends.
Mr. Ogdon was born March 27, 1833, in Vermilion county, Ill., having past the seventieth milestone in life's highway. He was married to Miss Phoebe J. Albin, who resided three miles south-west of Newman, being the daughter of the late Robert, on Nov. 28, 1855, to to this union six children were born -- five sons and one daughter: J. W. Ogdon, Los Angeles, Cal.; W. C. Ogdon, Metcalf; S. H. Ogdon, Long Beach, Cal.; C. M. Ogdon, Westville. Ill. and Mrs. Lillie J. Eagler, Newman, Ill. All the children survive him, his second son George A., who preceded him to the better land some sixteen years. He leaves the wife and five children besides one brother out of ten brothers and sisters and other near and dear relatives to mourn his untimely death. His son Willis resides in Los Angeles, Cal., and all children except him were present at the funeral. About twent years ago, Mr. Ogdon united with the Christian Church of Newman and has been a devout member of that sect ever since. He was one of the charter members of the Metcalf I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 635, institued January 23, 1893. A few years later he became a member of the Rebeckah degree of the order. He has also been a member of the Knights of Honor for over twenty two years.
The deceased was an honored man whose uprightness and business integrity will be remembered for years. His life was one worthy of emulation and his place in the church and secret societies will be hard to fill. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the many friends.
