John graduated from Hamilton College in 1817. He then read law in Whitesboro, NY and worked in cotton manufacturing there and in Laurel, MD. When he emigrated to Kenosha, he became a farmer and was a member of the first Wisconsin legislature. The town of Capron, Wisconsin was named for him.
Married, first, Emma Cynthia Northup on 13 Aug 1818. She was born in Syracuse, NY about 1797, and died 26 Oct 1821, "aged twenty-four years" in Oriskany, NY.

2. Emma Cynthia; married Dr. DeWilton Snowden, eleven children.
Married, second, Eliza Brown on 21 Nov 1822. She was John's sister-in-law, the sister of his brother Newton's wife Maria. Both were daughters of Jesse Brown of Cumberland, RI. Eliza was born 21 Jun 1800, and died at Dunkirk, NY on 20 Nov 1830 "aged thirty years".
