Oscar Henry Bemis b. 19 Oct 1876 in Ludlow, VT. (according to his birth certificate). According to his death certificate he was born 18 Oct 1873.
His parents were Henry Bemis and Sarah Jane (Heselton) Bemis. On 5 Dec 1890 in Chester, VT Oscar Bemis, son of Henry Bemis, thirteen years old, while at play in the schoolhouse yard, fell and broke his leg above the knee. When he filled out his draft card for WWI, he was 44 years old, medium in height and stoutly built with blue eyes and light brown hair. He was a self employed farmer in Chester. His nearest relative was given as his brother Charles L. Bemis.
On May 25, 1923 the Bemis Brothers were in a terrible accident with another car. At first it was feared they were seriously hurt, but later seemed to have escaped with bruises and a severe shaking up. The cars were badly damaged. Charles Bemis was pinned under the car and Oscar bruised up his face. None of the occupants in the other vehicle were injured.
After his brother Charles committed suicide. Oscar lived alone for a time on the old 200 acre Bemis place. Then Nora Taylor, a native of Plymouth, VT came to keep house for him. Oscar Bemis died 7 Mar 1944. Nora stayed on after Oscar's death, and learned that a short time before his death Oscar had signed the property over to Leonard Parker for taking care of him, and also for care for Nora. The Parker family lived there and took care of them for a short while before Oscar died. Nora went to live with her sister in New York state and died there. Leonard Parker and family lived in the house until it was destroyed by fire. Leonard Parker ended up losing the Bemis property. To this day, all traces of of the farm, sawmill and barns are gone. Oscar died at the Springfield, VT hospital of chronic myocarditis a few days after he had an operation on his hernia. He was 70 years old. Oscar never married.
