At the taking of the 1850 census of Chester, VT Henry was living with Zaccheus Bates (aka: Jackins Balls) and Nancy (Parker) Bates, so he could attend school.
Henry (age 23) married Sarah Jane Heselton (age 18) of Andover, VT on March 1, 1860 in Chester, VT. They were living in Andover, VT on the Bela Gassett farm where Henry was employed as a farm laborer. Sarah's sister, Helen Heselton (age 14) was living with them so she could attend school in Andover, Vt. Sarah was born in Andover, VT on July 16, 1842, daughter of John Lawson and Esther P. (Kirk) Heselton.
At the time of the 1870 census, Henry was a farmer in Ludlow with property valued at $1200. He sold his farm and then moved to Chester, VT.
In 1880, family tragedy happened at the Bemis house in Chester. Young Charles Bemis (son of Henry and Sarah Jane) went upstairs to call his grandfather, John L. Heselton to breakfast. When the young Bemis boy got to the bedroom, he found that his grandfather was dead - the result of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The memory of this tragedy stayed with young Charles throughout his life.
In 1882, Henry purchased the old Francis Fuller farm in Chester, VT near the Andover town line.
Sarah Jane died of pneumonia on March 28, 1890 in Chester at the age of 47. On October 30, 1896 Henry's house was destroyed by fire, he had no insurance. Henry Bemis died quite suddenly on 13 July 1911 at the age of 79 at his home of acute digestion. Henry Bemis was never in the Military.
