Clifton Burnham PEKIN - Clifton "Tillie" Burnham, 90, of 2501 Allentown Road passed away at 11 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin. She was formerly a longtime resident of 1506 James Road.
Born April 9, 1917, in Halls, Tenn., to John and Cora Belle (Freshour) Tillman, she married Donald Kenneth Burnham on May 23, 1938, in Kahoka, Mo. He died Oct. 1, 1998, in Pekin.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.
Surviving are one son, Dennis K. (Sue Harris) Burnham of Folsom, Calif.; one daughter, Faye Jackson of Richmond, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three brothers, Jack Tillman of Pekin, Bill (Sarah) Tillman of California and John (Sheila) Tillman of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one sister, Betty (Dale) Stewart of Denver, Colo.
She was a 1957 graduate of Illinois State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She received her Master of Science degree in elementary education from ISU in 1962. An educator for 32 years, Tillie retired in 1982 from Pekin Public Schools District 108. She last worked as the principal of the former McKinley School for 12 years and was a teacher at Wilson School for the preceding 15 years. She previously worked in the Spring Lake and South Pekin school districts. She was a former member of the Education Association of Pekin, Ill., Education Association and the National Retired Teachers' Association.
She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Pekin. She was a former member of King's Daughters and the Berean Circle, both in Pekin.
Tillie was well-known for baking and decorating wedding cakes. She enjoyed it and was always entering sweepstakes. Most importantly, though, Tillie dearly loved children.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Betty Hornback will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral Monday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
