Obituary

Betty Joan Tillman was born on December 27, 1932 in Green Valley, Illinois. She was the youngest of 11 children. She attended school in Green Valley, but when the family moved to Pekin she continued her schooling there and graduated from high school in June 1950. She had met and dated Dale Stewart during her junior year in high school and they were married on December 31, 1950. They enjoyed a brief honeymoon in Chicago and settled in Pekin where their son Dale David was born in 1951. A year later, John Raymond joined the family. Her husband Dale suffered from allergies and they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they lived for three years. Allergy issues caused them to relocate again, this time to Denver, Co. When Dale and John were young teenagers, Daniel joined their family through adoption.
Betty worked for many years at Gates Rubber Company and finally retired from there in 1988. After the excitement of retirement wore off, Betty volunteered as a teacher's helper at Godsman Elementary School in her neighborhood and worked for a time as a phone counselor at Denver Victim's Service Center where she had opportunities to help many who were victims of crime.
She was an active member of the Denver Grace Brethren Church where she had become a member in 1969. She taught children's Sunday school classes, and worked with SMM girls, participated in the ladies' missionary group, helped with small group Bible studies and encouraged others to love and serve her Lord.
When she and Dale could no longer care for their house on Seneca Court, where they had lived for 40 years, they moved into a small retirement community in Wheat Ridge. Dale's health continued to decline and Betty became the main caregiver. In 2006, they lost their son John to COPD and other health issues. Then in April 2008, Dale passed away after only a few short weeks in a nursing home care.
Betty and Dale loved their family. Their son Dale was married to Sandi who passed away after a fierce battle with cancer. They have two children, Brandi and Jason and one granddaughter, Victoria. Their son Daniel is married to Debbie and they have two children, Ryan (16) and Emily (14). Betty loved to get pictures of her grandkids and was always eager to show them to anyone who came to visit.
In her last months, her health declined rapidly. After a severe fall in 2012 which forced her into a rehab center for a few weeks, she moved into the Granville Assisted Living Center. She was there less than a year when another fall injured her shoulder and she moved to the Cedars Healthcare Center in Lakewood. She was never able to return to independent living and that was a decision that she struggled with for many months. Alzheimer's robbed her of the ability to understand much of what was happening around her and toward the end of her life there were times when she did not know who she was.
One habit that Betty cultivated early in her life was daily Bible reading. Even in her last months the staff at the Cedars knew her as one who read her Bible. She faced many struggles throughout her life but she always said that "Jesus is my best Friend," and she depended on Him to help her through her daily struggles. She faithfully supported many different missionaries and knew the importance of people putting their faith and trust in Jesus for their salvation. She will be greatly missed.
