John was born to John Garwood and Hannah, surname unknown. His mother died in about 1796. He later moved to Warren County, Ohio and there wed cousin Jane Garwood on Febuary 12, 1820. There they had:

4) Mary Jane on 24 Jun 1827
5) Elizabeth Ann on 24 Jun 1827
6) Charlotte on 11 Apr 1830

In 1831, they moved to Clinton Township in La Porte County, Indiana and there was born:
