Joseph was born to Quakers William Garwood and Jane Troth. He wed Mary Pancoast, of Glouchester County, New Jersey, in Burlington County on June 12, 1766. As this marriage was outside the Quaker church, Joseph was nearly disowned by Evesham Monthly Meeting. Joseph and Mary had:
1) Martha on 22 Dec 1767
2) William Pancoast on 30 Oct 1768

Wife Mary died in 1768 and Joseph wed Mary[Smallwood] Hillman, widow of James Hillman, in Burlington County, New Jersey on August 2, 1769. As this marriage was not per Quaker rules, Joseph was disowned by Evesham Monthly Meeting. Joseph and Mary had:
1) Abigail on 17 Sep 1770 (D: 20 Aug 1771)
2) Joseph on 18 Jul 1772
3) Kerenhappuch on 6 Feb 1776
4) John on 6 May 1778
5) Rebecca on 28 Oct 1780

In 1786, per Quaker records, Mary made a request to Evesham Monthly Meeting (MM) for her and her minor children Joseph, John, Kerenhappuch, and Rebecca to be joined in membership with the Friends(Quakers). Mary's request was accepted.

Mary's Friends membership was transferred to Mount Holly MM in 1790 then to Haddonfield MM in 1792.
