His great-grandparents were Timothy M. Snyder, a Civil War veteran who had fought with the Pennsylvania 47th Volunteers in Sheridan's 1864 Shenandoah campaign, and Catharine (Boyer) Snyder. An application made in the 1940s to the Sons of the American Revolution by his father documented the family's relationship to Revolutionary War veteran, Johann (John) Nicholas Schneider.
His grandparents were John Hartranft Snyder, one of the co-founders of the Lavelle Telephone and Telegraph Company which served Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, and Minnie Rebecka (Strohecker) Snyder, proprietor of a local dry goods store.
Jack grew up in Sunbury in Northumberland County, where he met Suzanne Landau. They were married at Zion's Lutheran Church in September 18, 1954. Together, they had four children: John David ("J.D.") Snyder, Jeffrey, Peter, and David.
Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force on December 27th of that same year, he served until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel on December 31, 1977. His tours of duty took him to Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Texas, where he spent the remainder of his life.
He is interred at the national military cemetery at Fort Sam Houston. His son, J.D., is interred at the U.S. Air Force Academy Cemetery in Colorado. David, his son who died in infancy, is interred with Jack's parents in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
