Seth & his brother, William, were the only 2 children born to Nathaniel Oakes & his 1st wife, Tabitha (Rice).

Seth was a farmer & a carpenter. He served in the French & Indian War 1753-54, also known as the Seven Years War. He was known as "Captain" Seth Oak/Oakes, although he never held a commission. He also served in the Colonial War 1755-60; the Lexington Alarm in 1775 during the Revolutionary War, where he served as Sergeant; and at Winter Hill as Quarter-Master-Sergeant.

In 1763 he started out with a group of friends to start a settlement in Lunenburg, Vermont, but by tradition, sold his interest for a glass of grog before arriving there. In 1779 he & two others went to Athens, Vermont, and built a log cabin, where they moved their families in the spring of 1780. Seth & two of his sons were the original grantees of this town & his daughter, Polly, was the first child born in Athens. Seth spent his last days with his daughter, Saloma, in Townsend, Vermont.

Seth married Elizabeth (Shevally) on May 25, 1757, in Bolton, Massachusetts. She was one of seven children born to Joseph & Hannah (Hosmer) Shevally.
