Beriah Oakes, Sr. was 1 of 6 children born to Nathaniel Oakes, Sr. & his 2nd wife, Kezia (Maynard).

Vital Records of Bolton, MA, pg. 157:
Beriah Oakes married Tabitha Fosket, Dec. 31, 1767.
Their 9 children:
John, Elizabeth, James, Abraham, Asa Sr., Daniel, Sr., Eunice, Phebe, Beriah Oakes, Jr.

Beriah was a private in the MA Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. Family legend says Beriah was plowing his field near Bolton, some 8 to 10 miles from Concord, with a pair of oxen & a horse, his son John riding the horse, when word came the British were marching to Concord. He left his son & the oxen in the field, rode the horse to his house, got his gun & started out for the fight. He didn't return for several days.
He served at the Lexington Alarm 1775 in Capt. Longley's Company, Colonel Whitcomb, being discharged April 14, after 10 days service.

He was a prosperous man but died before the age of 40. Inventory of his estate was taken March 22, 1781, probably at the time his last will was written.
The income of his estate was left for the support of his aged parents & was distributed in 1795, after his mother's death in 1794.

His children & grandchildren were all "workers in wood" as well as farmers. It was said an "Oaks house" could be recognized by the chips & shavings.

In 1795 Beriah's under age children were appointed guardians:
Elnathan Polly was appointed guardian of Daniel, age 19, and Phebe, age 16.
Bezaleel Hale, Jr. was appointed guardian of Eunice, age 17, and Beriah Jr., age 14.
