DAVENPORT — Funeral services for Julia A. "Alice" Appleby, 105, of Davenport, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Cunnick-Collins Mortuary chapel in Davenport. Interment will be at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the mortuary. Mrs. Appleby passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Davenport.
Julia Alice Gharrett was born in Bloomington, Ill., on December 30, 1905, the daughter of William and Edith (Gilbert) Gharrett. In 1924, she married Robert H. Appleby in Ottumwa, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1972. Mrs. Appleby served as both national secretary and national president of Mothers of World War II. She was also a camp counselor, leader, and cook for the Girl Scouts.
She is survived by two daughters, Evalyn VanZandbergen of Davenport and Ellen (Ernest) Hedger of Viola, Ill.; a son, William Appleby of Bettendorf; three sisters, Mildred Edmund of Florida, Mary Mairet of Davenport, Iowa, and Oma Redden of Florida; 20 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 36 great-great-grandchildren, and 53 great-great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jack Appleby; two sisters, Agnes Fuqua and Edith Bently, and a brother, Robert Gharrett.
