VETERAN JUSTICE OF PUEBLO COUNTY CALLED TO DEATH.
Justice of the Peace S. A. Bates died Thursday. The veteran justice whose record of having married couples from every state in the union except one attracted national attention, succumbed to a heart ailment which sent him to a hospital a week earlier. He was 82. Death came before he could fulfill the ambition of perfecting his marriage record by performing a ceremony for a couple from the state missing from his list. Vermont. He performed more than 1,500 ,marriages during his 16 years in office. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Davis memorial chapel, with the Rev. George F. Lewis officiating. He will be buried beside the body of his wife, Mrs. Ruth Bates, who died in 1926. Surviving relatives include two children, Wallace L. Bates, Pueblo railroader and Miss Ruth Bates, a school teacher in district 60. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lee Jones and Mrs. Maggie Exton of Martha, Tenn. also survive. Justice bates attended the Baptist Church. He came to Pueblo 46 years ago from Nashville, Tenn., and in the 17 years he served as a justice of the peace won the title "marrying justice" as he had united nearly 2,000 couples in marriage ,representing every state in the union except Vermont. He first became a justice in 193. Justice bates was born in Tennessee, on a farm near Lebanon. His parents were farm folk. and he remained on the farm until he was about 20 years old. he attended country grade and high school. and held his first job when he was 10 years old. He worked for a cotton gin operator for 25 cents a day. His duties were to help pack cotton into press basket. When he was about 21. Justice Bates left the farm and went to work s grocery clerk for the V.C. Collier Grocery Co. in Nashville. he remained with the company until it sold out about 15 years later, and then worked for the company's successor for about a year before he came to Pueblo. When Justice Bates came to Pueblo Feb. 4, 1903, he went to work for the Louis Ruegnits grocery at the Messa junction, and was with the firm 13 years. When the business was sold Mr. Bates went into the grocery business for himself, and occupied the same building at the Mesa junction for 13 years more, quitting business in 1929.

Burial in the family plot Mountain View cemetery next to his beloved with Ruth L. Bates who died in 1929.

SMUEL BATES RITES WILL BE HELD TODAY
Funeral services for the late Samuel A. Bates, justice of the peace here for 17 years, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Davis Mortuary. The body will lie in state at the mortuary until noon. Pallbearers will be Frank O'Neil, Walter J. Christman, Judge Harry Leddy, Homer King, James A. Cochran and George J. Schnarre. The Rev. George F. Lowe will conduct the funeral and burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Justice Bates died Thursday of a heart ailment.
