Mary Brett-Surman was born in Winnipeg, Canada on August 14, 1916 and died in Orange, VA on September 3, 2001. She was the daughter of Eloise Drake Bannerman and Robert C. Bannerman and she graduate[sic] from Central High School in Washington, D. C. in 1934. In the 1940's she worked for the State Department in embassies and consulates in Bogota, Columbia; Dakar, Senegal; and Paris, France. She was one of the first civilians to enter Paris during the liberation in 1944. In the 1960's she worked as a newspaper reporter for the Pelham Sun and the Mamaroneck Daily Times. In the 1970's she wrote mysteries and two of her stories appeared in the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and the Alfred Hitchcock Magazine. In the 1980's she wrote for seven years for the Tidewater Times in Talbot County, MD. She lived with her first husband, Kenneth H. Brett-Surman in Larchmont, NY from 1950 to 1969. Upon his death, she moved to Royal Oak, MD where she married William Bradford, who died in 1976. Mary is survived by one son, Dr. Michael Brett-Surman, a paleontologist at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, and one brother Robert Bannerman of Santa Rosa, FL.
