Samuel Madlem, 80, who lived in Elkhart until his wife’s death three years ago, died of a stroke Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs Anna Bechtel, two mile north and a half mile east of Wakarusa.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev John Gingrich Friday at 1:30 pm at the Bechtel home, and at 2 o’clock at the Olive Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the Olive cemetery. Friends may call at the Bechtel home after 7 o’clock this evening.

Mr Madlem was born Aug 6, 1869, near Wakarusa, the son of Isaac and Elizabeth Fink Madlem.

His marriage to Emma Weldy took place Dec 18, 1890. Besides residing in Wakarusa community, they spent 15 years in Newaygo county, Michigan, and had lived in Elkhart 20 years when Mrs. Madlem went to the daughter’s home to live after her death.

Survivors are another daughter, Mrs Mabel Vantine of Elkhart; five sons, Elon and Eldon of Elkhart, Levi of Milford and Alvin and Wilbur of Wakarusa; three sisters, Mrs Lydia Lockwood of Adamsville, Mich, Mrs Emma Sanders of Elgin, Ill, and Mrs Levi Weldy of Wakarusa; a brother, Allen Madlem, Elkhart, 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mr Madlem was a member of the Prairie Street Mennonite church.
